The Tamil Nadu police have registered a rape case against former Deputy Mayor of Trichy district, who resigned from his post recently following allegations that he had sexually abused a woman for several years.

Asik Meera, son of former minister Mariam Pitchai in the ruling AIADMK, took over as deputy mayor of Tiruchirappalli Corporation in October 2011.

In her complaint, the 29-year-old woman hailing from Trichy district alleged that she was a friend of Meera since 2006 and he promised to marry after making her pregnant. The complainant also alleged that she had aborted the pregnancy on many occasions.

According to her, though Meera got married to another lady, he continued to maintain a relationship with her.

Claiming that Meera was the father of her girl child, she said the former Deputy Mayor was not only refusing to marry but also threatening her using goondas.

Meera has resigned citing personal reasons.
