A 39-year-old man was shot dead and his three accomplices were injured in an assault by about 10 men at north Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi late on Wednesday. The victim and the primary suspect are alleged to be bad characters of the area and the murderous assault is seen as gang war.

Victim Rajiv was first thrashed with sticks and rods before being pumped with bullets. While the suspects are identified, no arrest has been made.

Police said they hope to nab the culprits soon. The attack took around 11.45 pm.

“Rajiv and his friends found themselves surrounded by the rival gang, allegedly led by Sunil alias Kalu. While Rajiv’s three accomplices Giriraj, Sonu and Kamal were restrained by some of the assaulters, Rajiv was thrashed,” a police officer said.

Even as Rajiv collapsed after the beating, one of the assailants pulled out a pistol and pumped bullets into his stomach.

Other assaulters took the cue and fired at Rajiv’s men. Police have so far found evidence of seven bullets being fired. By the time police arrived at the scene, the assaulters had fled.
The four injured persons were rushed to a nearby hospital where Rajiv was declared brought dead.

Sonu is said to be in a serious condition while the other two are out of danger.

Police took the statements of Giriraj and Kamal and registered a case of murder and attempt to murder against the accused.

Rajiv and primary suspect Sunil run private financing business and have been rivals for long.
The two groups had even entered into a fistfight a few days ago. Sunil had been booked in that case.

Wednesday’s assault was allegedly a reaction to that incident. Rajiv too had been booked for an attempt to murder case earlier.
