The Supreme Court on Monday extended the conditional bail of Kerala’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasser Maudany, an accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts, till August 22 as he claimed that he required further time for eye surgery and treatment for other ailments.

The 49-year-old Maudany, lodged at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, Bangalore since August 26, 2010, was ordered to be released on July 11 for one month by the apex court. He was told not to leave Bangalore. The police were allowed to watch him and his visitors.

A bench of Justices J Chelameswar and A K Sikri agreed to consider Maudany’s plea for extending period of his release that was coming to end on August 11. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for Maudany, referred to the petitioner’s affidavit that he has been admitted to Soukya International Holistic Health Centre in Bangalore on July 14, the date of his release, but his fluctuating blood sugar levels and many other complications required longer period of treatment.

Senior advocate Raju Ramachandran, representing Karnataka government, sought a week’s time for responding to Maudany’s plea.

In his affidavit filed through advocate Haris Beeran, Maudany stated, “He requires treatment for long term especially at a multi-speciality hospital and an eye hospital in order to effectively manage the ailments from which he is suffering and day-to-day attention and supervision will be necessary since all the diseases suffered by the petitioner have been aggravated during his custody from the year 2010 for want of timely treatment.”

Maudany said that the police had been keeping a watch on his activities and even collecting the names, phone numbers, addresses of all the visitors.  The police are taking photographs of the visitors as well as that of the vehicles in which the visitors come to the hospital, he said, contending that the police did not allow him to offer even the Eid prayer on July 29 in any masjid in Bangalore.
