The much touted Tata Nano project and its plant at Sanand might have restarted after a break of 45 days in production, but this time, it will not just be for the Nano but  other variants as well; or, even for production of  its new model Zest.

It has started trial production of cars at Sanand with reduced production capacity of 25 per cent.

Tata Motors officials confirmed to Deccan Herald that they had started operations after the rebooting process in June.  With the plant  having capacity to produce 2,50,000 cars per year, the lack of demand for the country’s cheapest car Nano, has  reduced production capacity to just 25 per cent of the total capacity.
Tata Motors officials now  point out that since the agreement with the Gujarat government  was signed for production of the Nano, which is not happening now due to falling demand,  they are in touch with government officials on whether the facilities could  be used for production of other cars — or even the variants of Nano like Nano Twist.

“We are  in touch with the state government, and convincing them about the utilization of this plant for production of other variants now and this is expected to  go up in the future,’’ said a Tata Motors offcial in Sanand.

He said that concerns of the state government are addressed as there have been no retrenchments at Sanand and many trainees have gone on to become permanent staffers. Officials said the company had charted out a plan even for the Sanand plant till 2020 as with other manufacturing plants of Tata Motors.
