Padukone tips medal for Saina

As the Indian shuttlers kick off their campaign in the BWF World Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark, from Monday, legend Prakash Padukone singled out Saina Nehwal as the main medal prospect for the country.

“Saina is coming from a good break. She has not done well in this event in the past, with her best performance being a quarterfinal finish. This gives her a very good reason to put up a good show and win a medal. Since she missed the Commonwealth Games, she has had more time to prepare for the Word Championship,” said Padukone on the sidelines of the Tata Capital Super Shuttlers finals here.

When asked bronze medal winner PV Sindhu’s chances, Padukone felt the rising star was slightly inconsistent. “Sindhu has the potential but she is very unpredictable because of her inconsistency. She won the bronze at the same competition last year  and is the only Indian to do so. Thus, she cannot be written off. But it all depends on how well she performs on the day.

“It is a tough tournament since all the top players will be seen competing. Compared to other Super Series events, this is a draw of 32 and if you reach the semifinals you are assured of a medal. It won’t be easy for our players but they can do it,” he added.

Saket wins

Saket CS and Maitreyi Singh emerged victorious in Tata Capital Super Shuttlers championship.
Fourth seed Maitreyi upset second seed Prerana 21-8, 21-11 while top seed Saket edged Tushar 21-4, 21-12 to bag the crown.

The victorious duo will get a free two-week coaching camp at Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy.
