A painter strangled his live-in partner of five years at their home at Agrahara Dasarahalli in Kamakshipalya on Thursday night, police said.

Srinivas and Uma, 38, had begun the relationship after the latter’s husband died five years ago.

Srinivas, an alcoholic, would often return home drunk and fight with Uma. On Thursday evening, the couple fought again. Then, in a fit of rage, Srinivas pounced on Uma and strangled her with a rope and ran away, according to the police. The incident came to light at 9 pm that night when the building owner found the door ajar. He peeped in only to find Uma lying dead on the floor. He then called the police.

The police found strangulation marks on Uma’s neck and took her body to the Victoria Hospital for post-mortem.

Uma’s two children from her earlier marriage stay at their relatives’ house in Ramanagar and are pursuing studies, the police added. A case has been registered and the police are on the lookout for Srinivas.
