School bus runs over 4-year-old boy

Driver manages to escape from spot, locals damage vehicle

A four-year-old boy playing in the streets outside his home in outer Delhi’s Kanjhawla was run over by a private school bus on Tuesday. The driver fled from the spot leaving behind the vehicle which was later impounded by police.

However, before the vehicle could be taken away by police, it was smashed by angry locals.
They also held demonstrations in the area and demanded that compensation be paid to the victim’s family.

The incident took place around 2 pm when Ajaz was playing in a lane outside his home in Kanjhawla’s Meer Vihar. Locals told police that a speeding school bus ran over him.
There was no student in the bus and police said it was returning to the school campus after dropping them home.

Some people near the accident spot immediately forced the bus to stop. Just as they were about to nab the driver, he managed to give them the slip and fled.

Agitated locals then resorted to damaging the vehicle and staged a demonstration there.
One of the residents, meanwhile, informed the police control room.

Police told the protesters that the driver would be identified and brought to book.
The locals returned to their homes after the police confirmation.

The vehicle was then impounded and a case registered under Motor Vehicles Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Court compensation
Parents of an 11-year-old boy, who died in a road accident involving a rashly driven tractor, have been awarded a compensation of over Rs 3 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, reports PTI from New Delhi.

The tribunal directed Bharti Axa General Insurance Co Ltd, insurer of the offending vehicle, to pay Rs 3,75,000 to the parents of Vikas, who died in September last year.

“On considering all the facts, I am of the view that the petitioners have proved that Vikas died due to the injuries sustained in the accident near Neem Chowk, Sangam Vihar due to rash and negligent driving of the tractor by the driver,” MACT presiding officer K S Mohi said.
“I hereby award a total compensation of Rs 3,75,000 to the petitioners,” the tribunal said.

The petition filed by victim’s parents said that on September 2, 2013, while Vikas was going to his house, a speeding tractor came from Pahari Wala School towards Peepal Chowk in Sangam Vihar here, in a rash and negligent manner and ran over him.

As the driver tried to run away, an eyewitness chased him and handed him over to the police.
The driver and owner of the tractor, through written statements, denied the allegations and said that the accident took place due to the victim’s mistake.
