Impressive rowers enter medal round

Indian rower Sawarn Singh Virk made the final of men’s single sculls while the double sculls and lightweight quadruple sculls teams too entered the medal round of the 17th Asian Games here.

Sawarn claimed the top place in repechage 1 of the 2000 metre race in 7:10.93 seconds. The double sculls team comprising Om Prakash and Dattu Baban Bhokanal bagged the first place in repechage 2 of their event. They took 6:40.77 seconds to finish ahead of South Korean pair Hwigwan Kim and Dosub Choi, who also advanced to the final.

In lightweight men’s quadruple sculls repechage 1, India’s Rakesh Raliya, Vikram Singh, Sonu Laxmi Narain and Shokendar Tomar finished second with a timing of 6:13.97 seconds.

Deepika’s tepid start

Ace archer Deepika Kumari made a tepid start to her Asian Games campaign but her male colleagues fared well as the archery competition kicked off here on Tuesday.

Deepika, competing in the individual recurve event, finished 10th in the opening ranking round after scoring 663. Laxmirani Majhi and Bombayla Devi Laishram were 16th and 10th respectively.

In the men’s compound individual, Sandeep Kumar was sixth, Abhishek Verma was ninth while Rajat Chouhan was 10th.

Women: Recurve: Deepika Kumari (663) 10; Laxmirani Majhi (652) 16; Bombayla Devi Laishram (652) 10.

Compound: Trisha Deb (687) 4; Purvasha Sudhir Shende (680) 11; Surekha Jyothi Vennam (680) 12.
