Thousands of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (AIADMK) cadres on Monday staged hunger strike and agitations across Tamil Nadu to protest against the conviction and arrest of their supremo J Jayalalitha in the disproportionate assets case

.

Wearing black shirts and black badges, MLAs of the ruling AIADMK along with the party functionaries, and leaders of various wings of the party, observed fast in front of the memorial of the party founder MGR on the Marina beach in Chennai.

Similar kind of protest demonstrations were also held in all district headquarters, headed by party's senior cadres. However, no arrests were made so far anywhere in the state.

Even thousands of fishermen in the coastal districts of Kaniyakumari, Tuticorin and Rameshwaram belonging to the AIADMK party did not venture into sea to express their support to Jayalalitha.

Meanwhile, government bus services to neighbouring Karnataka and Kerala resumed with tight security.

Police sources from the headquarters here said the state was subjected to sporadic violent incidents like stone pelting.

The Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ Association has decided to cancel shows on Tuesday to express solidarity to Jayalalitha.

By and large, normalcy resumed in all the districts of the state, with buses and vehicles plying and offices and educational institutions running normally.
