A 40-year-old man, suspecting his wife’s fidelity, committed suicide by setting himself ablaze at his residence in Siddapura under Varthur police limits on Monday.

The police said that Anand was a private company employee and his wife a homemaker. Both hailed from West Bengal and had come to the City six months ago.

Anand used to suspect that his wife was having an extra-marital affair and used to fight over the issue. On Monday night, he poured kerosene over himself and on his wife. But he set himself ablaze and his wife, who tried to rescue Anand, also caught fire.

Hearing their screams, the neighbours doused the fire with help of blankets and shifted them to a nearby hospital. But Anand was declared brought dead and the doctors suggested the police to shift his wife to Victoria hospital. She has suffered 90 per cent burns and her condition is said to be critical.
