Activate VAS after explicit consent: TRAI to telcos

Last Updated 14 November 2014, 19:47 IST

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed all operators to take explicit consent of consumers before activating value added services embedded in their SIM cards.

The Telecom watchdog said it has received complaints that operators have activated Value Added Services (VAS) embedded in SIM cards without the customer’s consent. Operators load SIM cards with several VAS while issuing them to their subscribers.

The TRAI had earlier directed operators to obtain written confirmation of consumers "through consumer originated SMS or e-mail or FAX or in writing within 24 hours of activation of the value added service and charge the consumer only if confirmation is received from him".
