Hampi Kannada University former VC Prof B A Viveka Rai has called upon all the Tulu organisations come together and conduct a survey on Tulu speaking people before the next census, to get a clear cut idea on Tulu in the region.

Speaking at a session on ‘inclusion of Tulu in eighth schedule of the constitution’ at Vishwa Tuluvere Parba on Saturday, he said that the census have failed to provide complete details on Tulu speaking people. There is a need to bring out more number of literature in Tulu language. “There is a need to demand for inclusion of Tulu in eighth Schedule of the Constitution along with other languages.”

Prof Rai said that the notion that Tulu can not be included in the eighth schedule unless the language is declared as official language is wrong. “Tulu should get official language status in the State. However, it was not the only criteria for getting the status in the eighth schedule,” he added.

He said former defence minister George Fernandes had tried to include Tulu in the eighth schedule. Tulu has all the eligibility criteria to be included in the eighth schedule as it is spoken by all irrespective of caste and religion.

“If Tulu is included in the eighth schedule , then the government will release funds to take up development works. Tulu will be included in the CBSE syllabus and NCERT will prepare textbooks. If Tulu was declared as official language, then the State government can start Tulu language training centre,” Prof Rai added.

MLC Ivan D’Souza said that he will impress upon the State government on the need to include Tulu in the eighth schedule.

Experts K Chinnappa Gowda, Vaman Nandavara, Janaki Brahmavar and others were present.
