Facilities will soon be improved at the burial grounds falling under BBMP jurisdiction at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.

Mayor N Shanthakumari, who undertook a surprise inspection of a number of burial grounds on Tuesday, said the amount will be released from the Mayor’s funds for improving the infrastructure, cleanliness and provide other amenities.

On finding the burial grounds at Mysore Road, Old Guddadahalli and Hindi Burial Ground near Jaibhimanagar in a dilapidated state, the Mayor turned furious. She took the Palike officials to task and instructed them to clear the overgrown weeds at Hindu Burial Ground, in a week.

The burial ground at Banashankari too was in a similar condition.

“The compound wall has fallen off and the place where pujas are conducted is also dirty. There is no proper road that leads to this burial ground. Why are the officers here when they cannot do their duty effectively? They should immediately restore the wall, install a gate and provide security guards,” she said.
