'State must ban Shaurya Diwas'

Senior Congress leader B Janardhan Poojary on Wednesday urged the State government to set a model for other states by banning the observance of the proposed Shaurya Diwas by the Hindu Mahasabha on January 30 to commemorate Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Poojary said the State government should deal with an iron hand the Mahasabha’s proposal to observe Shaurya Diwas by garlanding the photographs of Godse in various cities.

Poojary wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chosen to remain silent when the Mahasabha representatives had announced plans to built a temple of Nathuram Godse.

The former Union minister said the government should have taken a firm stand on the proposed bill on regulating religious mutts. “Tabling the bill in the legislature and later stating that the government will withdraw it does not send the right message,” Poojary said.
