Mirror, mirror, on the wall...

MAGIC OF ILLUSION  If you’re not sure what kind of accessories to use for your home, go with mirrors. They’re foolproof, dependable and chic, vouches Simran Chhibber

If I were to be asked “What is the one element that can act as a magic
concoction in a décor setup,” my answer without any hesitation would be - mirrors.

A mirror is that one single element in design that can change the look of your décor by 360 degrees. Of course, only if it is used correctly. Mirrors are also a universal solution to many design dilemmas that homeowners face everyday.

These being the lack of light, dealing with constrained spaces, choice of artwork, amongst many others. Let me bring to light a few ways in which you can use mirrors to enhance the look of your space.

Altering compact spaces
A compact space, apart from providing little capacity for you to try out something elaborate, can make you feel very restrained and confined. While, there may be very few ways to increase the actual size of available space, there are a quite a few ways in which you can trick the eye.

A large mirror, hung handsomely on a wall, can do the trick very efficiently. A mirror can add depth to your space, negate the effects of a small space and cheat the eye into believing that it is a large space.

The reflection on the mirror can actually make one feel that there is so much more behind the solid wall. When in a changing room at a clothes store, have you noticed the magic mirrors work in that constrained space. That is something we can try to get some inspiration from...

Art work
Don’t have a perfect art piece for the wall? Just add a beautifully framed mirror on the wall. It will reflect the happenings on the opposite wall, the people crossing by and all the activity that goes within a room. A piece of dynamic artwork at a dirt cheap cost. It is something that you should
definitely try.

Luminance to space
Mirrors reflect their surroundings and they can reflect the lighting, too. Just imagine you can have one lamp turned into two, physically and functionally, too!
Mirrors with their great quality of reflectance can actually increase the
quality of luminance in a room.

Placing a mirror so that it reflects the fireplace in your room could be a way to use the quality of reflectance of mirrors. Having a mirror ceiling in a compact space, say small bathrooms, narrow lobbies and alleys can change the look of that space when the lights go on.

The ceiling mirrors spread multiplied light gorgeously in a small space, thus adding value to the décor there. You must have heard of Sheesh Mahals that kings and queens used. Well, the reason for the grandeur was the magnificent play of light that they put forth.

On wardrobes
Mirrors serve a dual purpose when placed on wardrobes. Apart from making the bedroom seem more expansive and converting your regular wardrobe into a piece of art, wardrobe mirrors serve as great dressers, too.

Dark corners
A large mirror placed in a corner with a lamp placed in front can add so much
value to your dull living room corner. It can throw out gloom and bring joy into that neglected corner. When placed against a corner window, mirrors can
reflect so much natural light into a space and add a factor of cheer and sunshine into your décor setup.

Grand entrance
You can enhance the look of your home’s entrance by placing a large mirror on the wall adjacent to the door. It can add that whole feeling of opulence and grandeur by visually increasing the space and actually multiplying light.

Two is better than one
Say you have one plant in your room. Place it opposite a mirror in the room and enjoy the view of two. Mirrors can beautify your décor setup by multiplying the elements of design without you having to purchase multiple units of the same thing.

The same can apply to windows, too. Placing a large mirror opposite a window can help you create two windows in a room when you thought you could have just one.

The correct use of mirrors can help you turn a small, cramped space into a grand one. The larger the mirror, the more salient the features. In fact, the concept of complete mirror walls is very much in vogue right now. People use frameless
mirrors end to end and create a stunning illusion of a much larger and expansive space.

So, if in a dilemma whether to invest in a large mirror or not, it’s prudent to go for it. Mirrors can certainly enhance the look of your space by making them look
expansive, well-lit, airy, spacious and welcoming. Of course, you also get to own a piece of dynamic art along the way.
