Much ado about nothing?

Last Updated 11 March 2015, 16:50 IST

The restrictions and ban imposed on some issues had many venting their anger on social media. Not only have these subjects  garnered plenty of eyeballs, but  have also been a matter of  debate. The opinions are divided and diverse as people themselves. Youngsters too have been vocal about their point of view.

While some are some supporting the bans, others feel that ‘a ban on banning’
would be the ideal thing to do.  As told to Preethi Ravi.

Unjustified moves

George Thomas, a BA student from Kristu Jayanti College, feels that banning certain things is necessary but bans should not hurt the sentiments of people. “Some of the restrictions are absolutely unjustified. Leaders are elected to help people and not to go against them. They should act as facilitators.”

Censorship is the way to go

Melita Anjali Monis, an MA student from St Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, says, “The word ‘ban’ has a negative connotation. When it comes to films, censorship is the right way out as it filters unwanted elements and doesn’t put a complete stop to something. A ban is more of   an individual response whereas censorship is the view of a group.”

A need to delve deeper

Poklang, a BA student from Kristu Jayanti College, says, “Some people who impose bans are unable to understand the generation of today, which is all for free speech. They should be focussing more on important issues concerning nation-building. I feel there is a generation gap. Above all, the freedom of expression should not be curbed.”

Confined by restrictions

Gouri V Nair, a BA student from Kristu Jayanti College, says, “The recent ban on a documentary is a restriction on the freedom of expression. Banning is not the solution to a problem and we need to face the reality.  As far as the documentary is concerned, it throws light on the need of education in changing one’s mindset .”

Accepting reality

Amera Sailani, a student from St Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, says,  “A ban does not help in stopping people from having access to something. In the case of films and documentaries, they are available online, though it may be for a short span of time. Some stories need to be told to showcase the reality and injustice happening in the society.”
