Father kills alcoholic, arrested

His family regulary fought with him over his drinking

A 53-year-old man allegedly killed his son on Sunday night following a fight that broke out between them over the 30-year-old’s drinking habits.

The accused, a tailor by profession, was arrested soon. The billhook used in the offence was recovered from the spot, said police on Monday.

Victim Munawwar lived in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar with his parents, brother, wife and two children.

Police said an initial probe has revealed that Munawwar was an alcoholic and used to fight with his family over his drinking habit.

“The worst rebukes came from his father and wife whenever he returned home drunk from work. Munawwar would fight with them each time and even indulged in physical violence sometimes,” said a police officer.

His wife moved to her parents’ home with her children a few weeks ago when she could not tolerate his behaviour any longer and ended up indulging in an ugly fight with him.

He did not change his habit even after that and returned home drunk on Sunday too, at 9.45 pm.

His father Mohammad Ismail began scolding him as soon as he reached home from the embroidery shop where he worked.

This led to an argument and it soon turned into a scuffle.
In a fit of rage, Ismail picked up a billhook lying in a corner of the room and attacked him on the neck.

Munawwar immediately collapsed on the floor but his father continued attacking him, said the officer.

By the time police were informed, Ismail had fled from the home. He was nabbed soon in the area. The victim was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
