Positive developments in Sarabjit's case: Lawyer

Last Updated 05 January 2010, 12:57 IST

"Though our mercy petition is pending with the President of Pakistan (Asif Ali Zardari), there were developments in the case in the past six months which are positive," Awais Sheikh told reporters here.

The case of Sarabjit Singh was one of mistaken identity, said the lawyer of the Indian national who is languishing in a Lahore jail for over 19 years.
"We have enough evidence to prove that Sarabjit is not Manjit Singh against whom the trial was held in Pakistan," he said and added he was hopeful of his client's release.
Sheikh, a Pakistani national, said in the petition he had urged the President to convert his death sentence into life imprisonment.

"If this happens, Sarabjit will be released in two or three days as he has already spent over 19 years in jail.
"I have also written to the President that I want to meet him to submit one lakh copies of request from Indians to free Sarabjit," the lawyer said.
Sarabjit's sister Dalbir Kaur, who along with her daughter and Sheikh are on their way to Ajmer Dargah, alleged the Indian government did not hold any talks with Pakistani officials for over a year pertaining to the case.

"I am now seeking help of the international community for the release of Sabarjit. I will also apply for visa for Pakistan to meet my brother.
"After that, I will try to meet US President Barack Obama to seek his intervention in the matter," she said.
