Pulse polio programme from January 10

Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj said that polio drops will be administered to about 1,74,407 children in the district. While drops will be given to children in rural areas in the district on January 10, urban areas will be covered on 11th, 12th and 13th. While 931 booths will be set up for the administration of drops in the district, there will be 10 additional mobile booths which will be placed in Mangalore taluk (7), Puttur town (2) and Dharmastala (1), he added.

In Mangalore taluk, the total number of booths willl be 252, while 194 booths will be opened in Bantwal and 145 in Puttur taluk. While 165 booths will be opened in Belthangadi taluk, Sullia and Mangalore city will have 75 and 90 booths respectively, DC said.

 The district administration has made all arrangements to implement the programme efficiently, he said adding that deep freezer, IALR polio vaccines and banners have already kept ready.

SMS alert

Ponnuraj said that an SMS alert system will be introduced to create awareness on the pulse polio programme. The state owned BSNL has already agreed to send SMS to all its customers in the district two days prior to the programme. Similarly, private operators will also be requested to send SMS on pulse polio to its customers, he added.

Quoting a recent instance of death of a polio patient from Uttar Pradesh in Bangalore city, DC said that the possibilities of disease is more in migrant population. The number of migrant labourers is more in Dakshina Kannada district compared to other districts. Hence, people in the district should be more vigilant, he added.

The DC said that the District Administration has requested KSRTC and private bus operators to cooperate with the pulse polio programme. Buses should provide stops at pulse polio booths to facilitate the passengers to administer polio drops to their children.
The number of polio cases in the world has reduced considerably in recent years.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr H Jagannath and District Medical Officer J Prabhudeva were present.
