Last Updated 13 January 2015, 17:58 IST

The Congress-led State government was busy doling out ‘Bhagya’ schemes and had neglected the sufferings of farmers. Will it now announce ‘nenu (hanging) bhagya’ next and distribute ropes and insecticides to farmers?, asked former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy.

He was speaking to media persons at Mudalabeedu village, near here, on Tuesday, after paying a visit to the house of a farmer, who committed suicide on Monday night.

He said, Thammaiah (70), took the extreme step as he could not repay loans availed from banks as well as private lenders because his tobacco crops failed to fetch good price. Thammaiah had committed suicide by consuming pesticides at his house.

Pointing out that five farmers had committed suicide in Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s district ever since he asumed power. “What are the three ministers from the district doing even as the tobacco mafia is exploiting the growers?” he said.
