While the census  which began on Wednesday will be conducted in rural areas till Friday, it will be conducted in Kolar city and the taluk headquarters up to Saturday, according to department officials.

Changes have been effected in the census from this year. Instead of enumerating children in the age group of 6-14 years, the children in 0-18 year age group will be covered under the exercise for the first time.

A total of 872 school teachers from the taluk have been roped in as enumerators. Nearly 87 supervisors have been appointed to monitor the exercise.

The exercise has been entrusted to the enumerators.  Based on the number of households in the identified areas,  each enumerator is asked to visit a minimum of 50 households daily. After January 8, the data collected would be compiled and submitted to the department in Bangalore.

The census gains significance since the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan aims to ensure compulsory education to all children. Enumerators have been directed to highlight the objectives of compulsory education in order to persuade parents to send their children to school. Schools have been closed during the period of the census.
