Birth centenary of actor Honnappa Bhagavathar

The Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy has organised a two-day event to observe the birth centenary of renowned Kannada singer and actor C Honnappa Bhagavathar.


The event was inaugurated on Saturday. Besides a photo exhibition showcasing moments from the Bhagavathar’s films, three of his best-known films would also be screened. On Saturday, his movie ‘Mahakavi Kaildasa’ was screened. ‘Pancharatna’ and ‘Jagajyothi’ are slated for Sunday screening at 10.30 am and 2.30 pm, respectively, at Priyadarshini, Badami House.


Over 200 selected photos on display, mostly black and white, indeed speak about his journey from being a theatre person to a singer and then an actor and film maker. The photographs will be on display on Sunday too at the Badami House. Later, they will be uploaded on the Academy’s website. Senior artiste Shivaram said on the occasion that Bhagavathar was so passionate about film-making and acting that he did not think twice before he sold his personal belongings to pursue his passion.


Minister for Kannada and Culture, Umashree, who inaugurated the event, said the next generation could learn a lot from Bhagavathar’s movies. “There is a need to showcase such old movies and let the young people compete with them in terms of caliber,” she said.
