BTPS 3rd unit to start producing power by May

The work on the third unit of Bellary Thermal Power Plant (BTPS) near Kudithini is nearing completion and it will start generating power by May or June this year.

The work that was supposed to be completed by December last year, has been delayed by six to seven months. This has dimmed the possibilities of making available additional 700 MW power this summer.

As many as 80 percent of the work on the Rs 700-crore project has already been completed. The civil work is expected to end in March. Cooling towers, chimneys and boilers have been installed and some electrical work and joining of trolleys to supply coal is pending. The work is on in full swing, G Ratnamma, Managing Director of the Plant told Deccan Herald.

A super critical boiler unit has been installed in the new unit and the synchronisation work to enable power production is on. The power production will be delayed a bit because the work is yet to be completed, she added.

As many as 70 people work in the first two units with 500 MW capacity each. The 350 people required to work in the third unit will be recruited by March, she said.
