Brain-dead student not ragged: College

Last Updated 04 February 2015, 19:48 IST

Even as a student from SEA College of Nursing attempted suicide and is being treated in a private hospital in the City, the college management has claimed that the incident was not a case of ragging and hence no action was initiated against the suspected students.

According to the family’s claims, Tamarai Chelvan (18), who is now brain-dead, was a victim of ragging. The police had arrested four students in connection with the incident. They were released on bail on Tuesday. According to the police, the college management will be booked for negligence.

However, CEO of the institution, Poornima Srinivas, told Deccan Herald that the college had decided not to initiate any action against the students. “This is not a case of ragging. It was a fight among students. We have an anti-ragging cell. There are separate committees in each department of the institution for ensuring that there is no ragging on the campus or in the hostels,” she said.

“I am available to students on WhatsApp, too. Whenever there has been a problem, they have approached us and we have tried to sort it out. This was some personal fight among the boys which is being misrepresented by the family,” she added.

Even though the family has claimed that the college, which had earlier promised to bear the victim's medical expenses, has gone back on the word, the CEO told Deccan Herald on Wednesday that they would foot of the student’s medical bill. According to the CEO, there are 16 boys studying the nursing course. The four suspects are first year students, hailing from Tamil Nadu.
