Police have registered three cases against Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and its international working president Praveen Togadia for violating an order passed by the police commissioner and not abiding by the High Court directions.

The organisers of Virat Hindu Samajotsava held at the National College grounds in Basavanagudi on Sunday had aired Togadia’s speech defying a ban imposed by the police.

The cases were registered at Shankarapuram police station on Monday. The police booked cases for running the programme beyond the deadline fixed by the police; airing a recorded video speech by Togadia lasting for about 15 minutes; and preventing policemen from discharging their duties.

IPC sections invoked

The Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections invoked include 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), IPC 143 (unlawful assembly) and IPC 180 (refusing to sign statement) and IPC 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging of his duty).

The police had permitted the organisers to conduct the convention between 3 pm and 5 pm, but they began the meet at 4 pm and ended it at 9 pm, the sources said.

The police had banned airing of any type of content, provocative and inflammatory in nature, by Togadia, the police added.
