The High Court on Tuesday ordered issuance of notice to the government in a PIL that questioned the lack of standard operating procedure in police force and other departments for handling missing person and human trafficking.

The High Court Legal Services Committee contended the laws and guidelines on human trafficking cases was not being implemented. Data available with the police show 11,969 cases of missing persons were reported between November 2013 and November 2014. As per the National Crime Records Bureau compendium, Karnataka, ranked fourth with 412 cases of missing person last year. The committee sought directions to implement the special procedures under the special laws relating to trafficking such as the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956,  Pocso Act, 2012.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice Ram Mohan Reddy asked the petitioner’s advocate and the government counsel to come up with a proper SOP and adjourned the matter to February 24.
