J&K weather improves with rising temperature

Temperatures across Kashmir Valley and frontier region of Ladakh rose on Saturday, bringing relief to people after a spell of intense cold conditions.

A MeT department official said Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius, slightly up from minus 0.8 degrees the previous night. The minimum night temperature in Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir went up by over three notches from previous night’s minus 5.4 degrees Celsius to settle at minus 2.2 degrees, he said. The mercury in ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir settled at minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, up by over a degree from the previous night’s minus 3.8.

Leh town in Ladakh recorded the minimum temperature of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, against previous night’s 12.7 degrees, the official said. The nearby Kargil town recorded a low of minus 15.0 degrees Celsius as against the previous night’s minus 16.0 degrees.

Kargil continues to remain the coldest recorded place in the state, he added. MeT office has predicted that fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir from February 16, which could result in rain and snowfall till February 18.
