Rain, snow continue in J&K

With intermittent rains in plains and snowfall in upper reaches continuing in Kashmir for the second day on Tuesday, officials have advised the state administration to remain alert to possible avalanches and landslides in hilly areas.

A MeT Department official said famous ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir, which received 12 inches of fresh snowfall during the night, recorded the minimum temperature of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 2 degrees previous night. Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir, which serves as base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra, received 20.4 mm of rainfall and the minimum temperature there settled at 1.2 degrees Celsius against the previous night’s 0.4 degrees, he said.

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.9 degree Celsius, down by almost a degree from the previous night’s 4.8, the official said, adding the city received 13.8 mm of rainfall during the night. Leh, the frontier town in Ladakh region, recorded a low of minus 29 degrees Celsius – nearly two degrees down from minus 1.1 degree Celsius the previous night, he said.

 Nearby Kargil town registered the minimum temperature of minus 8.0 degrees Celsius and was the coldest recorded place in the state.
