2G accused Morani, Doshi's abroad trip plans dashed

Plan of Bollywood film producer Karim Morani and Reliance Group’s managing director Gautam Doshi, both accused in the 2G spectrum scam, to go on a brief foreign trip went haywire on Friday as a special court declined permission.

Managing director of the Unitech Group Sanjay Chandra, another accused in the case, was lucky as the court allowed him to travel to the UAE, Germany, Spain and Ireland to attend business meetings.

The court, however, warned Chandra, who will be on an 11-day foreign trip from Saturday, that he should “avoid” filing such applications frequently.

Morani, who his facing trial in the case along with former telecom minister A Raja and others, wanted to visit Dubai in the first week of March to finalise locations and making “all arrangements” for shooting of  a film “Dilwale”.

Morani told the court that his visit was necessary because he was the creative producer and associate director of the film. He also submitted before that court that he was required to travel abroad frequently as he earned his “livelihood” from film making. Morani’s counsel also mentioned  that he had in the past travelled abroad with court permission on various occasions and never misused “his liberty”.

Both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate opposed Morani’s petition, arguing that the application was “full of errors”.   Though the accused sought permission to go abroad from March 2 to March 9, he mentioned the period of his travel as from September 2 to March 9 in the prayer clause of his application.
