Spunky siblings help rescue many

Arsonist's two children alert residents in other flats

The two daughters of the man who set a building on fire displayed great courage by alerting residents and helping many of them escape even while risking their own lives. They lost their grandmother in their process and the older sister suffered broken bones.

Simran, 14, noticed the blaze and immediately woke up her family. Since the sole exit of the building was inaccessible due to the fire, the family rushed up to the first floor.

Simran and her sister Geetu, 19, then went about knocking frantically at every door on the first and second floor of the building to alert the residents.

“I helped at least five persons cross over to the neighbouring building. But I was too short to be able to climb over on my own, so I found a stool and helped myself,” Simran told Deccan Herald before her father’s involvement in the blaze was revealed.

In the entire commotion, the sisters were unable to trace their grandmother Kailash Rana and had to stop the search because of the rising flames.

Geetu, meanwhile, had focused her attention in rescuing her mother Mamta.
“She wrapped her mother in a thick quilt and asked her to jump. Scared of the height, her mother refused. But Geetu pushed her off the balcony without a warning,” said her uncle Satpal Chawla.
The quilt was meant to cushion the impact.

Her mother landed quite safely, suffering only bruises.
Geetu was not as lucky, though. She found another quilt for herself and jumped.
“But the quilt got hooked onto something in the balcony and I ended up jumping without any protection,” said Geetu. She fractured both her hands and is receiving treatment at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Her family was unable to trace her grandmother for hours even after the fire was doused. They later identified a burnt body as that of their grandmother.
