Last Updated 03 March 2015, 22:54 IST

To tackle the drinking water crisis in summer, the State Government is mulling over supplying water from private borewells.

According to Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer P A Gopal, most of the borewells in the villages have become defunct, and are waiting to be repaired. At the same time, cry for water is being reported from the villages, forcing the authorities concerned to think of an alternative.

The government will lay the pipeline from private borewells to supply water to the users at its own cost. If it proves to be a success, it may help address water woes in such places.
Apart from this, gram panchayats in the district have been asked to spend 50 per cent of the total grants sanctioned by the 13th Finance Commission.

`8 lakh for GPs

In his recent missive to the gram panchayats, Gopal has stated that the government has sanctioned Rs eight lakh to each of 235 GPs in the district. The panchayats have to spend the maximum of Rs four lakh (50 pc) to address the drinking water related woes in the villages coming under their jurisdictions.

Jayapura hobli in the taluk continues to reel under the water crisis. Taking cognisance of the same water is being supplied in tankers, while in some other parts of the district water supply is ensured under multi-village drinking water scheme. That apart, additional action plan has been prepared and sent to the government seeking Rs 40 crore to permanently address the water related woes in the district.
