A 25-year-old woman was strangled to death by her husband over suspicions of an illicit affair in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Saturday evening.

The suspect, Mohammad Shahid, was nabbed from his sister’s home on Sunday morning and he has confessed to his crime, said the police.

Shahid had taken his two children, aged five and seven, along with him while fleeing from the crime spot. Police said they have been recovered safely and handed over to their mother’s family.

The murder came to light on Sunday morning when the victim Zubain Khatoon’s brother Arif came to visit her at her rented accommodation in Uttam Nagar.

“Finding the flat locked from outside, he called on Zubain’s phone number. But he got suspicious on hearing the phone ring inside the house. He drew the attention of the neighbours who helped him break open the door,” a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

Zubain’s body was found lying inside wrapped in a quilt. The police said she was strangulated. The body was sent for post-mortem.

“Questioning of the neighbours revealed that Shahid was last seen hurriedly leaving the house on a motorcycle with his two children. Raids were conducted at his relatives’ homes in the city and he was nabbed from his sister’s home in the same area,” the officer said.

Shahid has confessed to his crime and said he strangulated his wife following an argument over her alleged affair with a neighbour. The couple had been fighting for many days over this issue. While Shahid accused her of infidelity, she vehemently denied it.

“The couple was involved in yet another argument over the same issue on Saturday evening. When she could not take Shahid’s allegations anymore, she threatened to disclose the issue to her parents. This enraged him and he strangled her,” said the officer.

Shahid then wrapped the body in a quilt and told his children to accompany him on some pretext.
