An Assamese student was allegedly thrashed by some residents of Amar colony during the wee hours of Thursday. The 21-year-old has suffered injuries to his limbs and jaw, but his life is out of danger.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, a senior police officer of South East District said initial probe did not point to a racist attack.

Instead, it appears the youth, identified as Guwahati-native Arbazuddin, accidentally tried to enter another flat in his neighbourhood believing it to be his own house. Police also suspect he was in an inebriated condition when the incident took place at 1.30 am on Thursday. This however will be confirmed only after medical reports arrive, said police on Sunday.

Arbazuddin had tried to open the lock of a house, but when the key failed to open it, he tried to break the lock, said sources based on initial probe. That had drawn the attention of some residents who emerged from their homes and thrashed him believing him to be a thief.

An FIR has been registered in this connection at the local police station and CCTV camera footages are being scanned.

“Greater details into the sequence of events will be ascertained by Monday,” said the officer.
