Last Updated 09 March 2015, 17:27 IST

During the Sarvajna jayanti celebrations held in the city, writer Kum Veerabhadrappa demanded the government to grant Scheduled Caste status to Kumbara community, here on Monday.

Speaking at the programme, he said that the community has been included in SC list in several parts of North India. The State government should also declare the community as SC and provide basic infrastructure facilities, he said.

Ancient inscriptions discovered in H D Kote taluk of Mysuru district, show that the community too was banished from society and were treated like dalits. In this backdrop, Kumbara community should be included in the SC list, he said.

Revenue and district in-charge minister Srinivas Prasad said that Sarvajna, by composing around 2,000 tripadis (three lined poems), strived to create awareness about social inequalities and introduced rational thought among the people in his poems. He also strived for a social revolution to uplift downtrodden communities, he added.

He said that persons like Sarvajna should not be restricted to one community alone. His messages span caste and creed, and was for the welfare of all humanity, he said.

Earlier, an attractive rally was taken out from Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple to Kalamandira.
