'Fashion belongs to the youth'

Suneet Varma once wished to be a sculptor but that was not meant to be. He became a reputed fashion designer and proved his merit.

Suneet, whose designs cater to modern, contemporary and young women, was recently in the City as part of Azva’s ‘Celebrating Beautiful Brides’. He has been reviving his fascination for gold by creating jewellery designs for Azva which was inspired by the 1930s French art decor with fine detailing and excellent craftsmanship. “There is something about gold that cannot be replaced by diamond. Although diamond is forever, gold is beyond forever. I’m a big lover of gold. Gold is trending in a big way as many young brides like to be connected with the tradition of wearing gold ornaments.”
Suneet is extremely rooted to Indian culture but his fascination towards European design is unusual yet connecting. His inspirations range from art and history of a place to precious junk bought at flea markets across the world. “Fashion belongs to youth or the young at heart. Whether it is fashion or jewellery, it mostly caters to youngsters,” says the designer.

According to Suneet, there is nothing sadder than a fashion victim. “Do not follow the herd, be yourself. Over-dressing, and over make-up is a big blunder. Simplicity is the easiest and the most elegant way to go. I would suggest young girls to choose wisely, whether it is your shoes, bags or the man on the arm. Remember, nothing should be better than you, you should be the best!,” says gleefully.

Suneet has garnered great success and appreciation worldwide. Reflecting on his 25 years in the industry, Suneet says his journey has been rewarding and overwhelming. But his sensibilities have remain rooted in art with traditional motifs and European silhouettes finding a delicate balance in all his collections.
