Mufti, Omar take oath at 12th J&K Assembly

Protem Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Mohammad Shafi, administered oath to 85 newly elected members of the 89-member House in Jammu on Tuesday.

Health Minister Lal Singh and Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Gupta took oath in Dogri, while Independent MLA Hakeem Mohammad Yasin took oath in Kashmiri followed by Raja Manzoor Khan who took oath in Gojri language.

Rest of the legislators took oath in Hindi, Urdu and English. Assembly Secretary M Ramzan told reporters that four members, who were stranded in Kashmir due to closure of the Highway and disruption in air services, could not be administered oath on Tuesday.

Officials said the six-year term of the Assembly will be counted from March 17 in line with constitutional provisions of the State.

“As per J&K’s constitution, the six-year term of the Assembly starts from its first sitting and not from the date of declaration of results or constitution of the House,” they said.
According to section 52 of the Constitution, the Assembly, unless sooner dissolved, shall continue for six years from the date appointed for its first meeting.

The legislators, according to official sources, are entitled to perks, including salary from Tuesday.
