A Delhi Police head constable was arrested on Wednesday for accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 at RK Puram police station in south Delhi.

Culprit Surender Singh was posted with the police station. He was nabbed after a man complained of harassment and threat of getting implicated in an eve-teasing case.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) Sindhu Pillai, the man had contacted them on helpline number 1064, which is for victims of corruption or harassment by police.

He was asked to visit the Vigilance Branch police station in central Delhi’s Barakhamba Road so that a trap could be laid to nab the accused red-handed.
“The complainant met us on Wednesday and stated that he had given a loan of Rs 2.40 lakh to his landlady. As she did not repay the money, he filed a case against her husband under Negotiable Instruments Act,” Pillai said.

It is alleged that Singh was also bribed by the woman. At her instance, he had allegedly made a phone call to the complainant asking him to vacate the woman’s house.

“The complainant pleaded with him that it was a civil matter and not concerning police and that he may be allowed to stay on till the end of the academic session of his children,” Pillai added. Singh agreed but asked him to pay Rs 10,000.

The complainant was also threatened of getting implicated in an eve-teasing case if he failed to pay the bribe. After negotiation, the amount was settled for Rs 7,000 to be paid in instalments.

On the basis of the complaint, a Vigilance team laid a trap at RK Puram police station, where Singh had called the complainant.

“Surender was nabbed when he received Rs 2,000 from the complainant,” Pillai said.
A case under Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against Singh with Vigilance Branch police station.
