Conmen pull a fast one, switch notes with paper bundles

Last Updated 21 March 2015, 05:18 IST

Two men have been arrested for allegedly cheating people at banks by exchanging their bundles of currency notes with plain papers cut in the same rectangular shape.

Another member of the gang, however, managed to give police the slip.
Police said they have recovered six bundles of such papers, neatly wrapped in polythene bags, from the accused. All the recovered bundles had one original Rs 100 note on the top and bottom each.

While two cases of cheating have been solved with the arrests, police are probing their involvement into other similar crimes.

While crimes of this nature were being reported from across Delhi, most of them were concentrated in central Delhi.

“They mainly targeted those bank customers who were not aware of the process of depositing money. On the pretext of helping the victims, they used to replace the currency note bundles with the paper ones that they carried,” said police on Friday.

The victims would realise they were duped only when they actually went to submit the cash at the bank counter. By then, however, the culprits would have fled.

A police team was established to nab the culprits after Daryaganj police station received two complaints in quick succession.

Apart from mounting surveillance on people earlier arrested for such crimes, police also monitored the bank branches from where such incidents had been reported.
Anil and Jai Prakash were nabbed near a bank in Daryaganj while they were looking for new targets there, said police.

Police were confirmed about their motive after the paper bundles were recovered from them.

However, their accomplice Sagar managed to escape.
