Ch'nagar geared up for census from April 11

Third phase of lake filling works to be dedicated on April 12

District in-charge Minister H S Mahadev Prasad said, arrangements have been made in the district for the state-wide socio-educational census being held from April 11 to 30.

Addressing a press meet in Chamarajanagar, on Wednesday, he said, the objective of the survey is to know about the status of religion, castes, education and industries in the district. Based on the survey, recommendations would be made to the government on reviewing the list of backward communities.

The Minister said, 353 supervisors have been appointed to monitor 2,136 blocks in the district — comprising 769 blocks in Chamarajanagar, 737 in Kollegal, 469 in Gundlupet and 161 in Yalandur taluks. About 1,985 enumerators have been deputed for the purpose. As per the 2011 population census, the population of the district is 10,20,791 and the number of families are 2,44,874, he said.

The last caste census was done in the year 1931 and no such census was carried out after Independence. The District Administration and department for Backward Classes Welfare have made all preparations to conduct the census, he added.

Filling lakes
The third phase of filling water to 20 lakes in Chamarajanagar and Gundlupet taluks are complete and would be dedicated on April 12, Mahadev Prasad said. Water Resources Minister M B Patil would attend the programme, which would benefit the farmers of the region, he said.

In the last phase, 10 lakes would be filled and lakes at Amachavadi, Nijalinganapura, Narasamangala, Meluru, Kilagerekere of Chamarajanagar taluk; Shanadarahalli, Balachavadi, Terekanambi, Terakanambi Doddakere and Utturukere of Gundlupet taluk, he added.

ZP President D C Nagendra, Deputy Commissioner A M Kunjappa, ZP CEO K H Narasimhamurthy, SP S Rangaswamy Nayaka and others were present.
