Cops open fire at two rowdies

Last Updated 11 May 2015, 20:00 IST

Two notorious rowdies were injured in their legs after cops fired at them in Palace Grounds on Monday afternoon.

George and Deva, who are involved in over a dozen heinous crimes, suffered injuries on ankle and knee respectively. They were shifted to Victoria Hospital for treatment and are stated to be out of danger, said the police.

Hazaresh, a sub-inspector and Raghavendra, a constable, both attached to Ashok Nagar police station, were also injured in the incident. Both are being treated at Victoria Hospital and are out of danger, said DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil.

George and Deva were on the run after they attacked two constables on May 2 in Vivekanagar. The Central Division police had constituted a special team, headed by ACP (Halasuru Gate sub-division) Amarnath Reddy to nab the duo. The team comprised inspector Rangappa, sub-inspectors Ravi and Hazaresh and constable Raghavendra, all attached to Ashok Nagar police station.

The team rushed to Palace Grounds after receiving a tip-off on whereabouts of George and Deva. The team members spotted a red colour van suspiciously parked in the Palace Grounds.

“Raghavendra and Hazaresh went near the car to ascertain identity of those sitting inside it. Suddenly, George and Deva pushed the door, bumped on Raghavendra and Hazaresh and started attacking them with daggers and lethal weapons,” Patil said.

Ravi and Rangappa, who were at a distance from the van, warned Deva and George against attacking the policemen. The cops also warned the rowdies to surrender, but the latter did not heed, the police claimed.

“Our men had to use their service revolvers when their orders failed to yield any results,” the DCP said justifying the act of firing. Ravi opened one round of fire, while Rangappa fired two rounds. One of the three bullets was misfired, while the two bullets injured Deva and George, the DCP stated.
