Apparently depressed over his wife deserting him over his drinking habit, a 35-year-old man committed suicide by hanging at his home in outer Delhi’s Kanjhawala late on Friday night.

The dead man, identified as Satveer, worked odd jobs and lived with his four children. He had been an alcoholic for long. After her repeated warning to him went unheeded, his wife finally left him and went to stay with her parents around three months ago.

She had left behind their four children and Satveer had been taking care of them. Satveer tried to persuade her to return to his home, but she remained adamant.

Satveer was finding it difficult to look after the children on his own and had gone into depression ever since, his eldest son Anshu told police.

He stopped going to work soon after that and would stay aloof at home. His children had tried to speak to him, but to no avail as he continued drinking heavily.

His suicide was discovered by Anshu on Friday night. Satveer had told his children that he was retiring to his room to take rest. Anshu went to check on him sometime later to find the room locked from inside.

The room was forcibly broken into and Satveer found hanging from the ceiling fan. Police were informed and the body brought down and sent for post-mortem.

No suicide note was recovered from his possession, said police. Foul play was ruled out after police questioned Satveer’s wife and children.

In an unrelated incident, a 21-year-old youth committed suicide by hanging at his home in west Delhi’s Nihal Vihar.

No suicide note was recovered from him either and police are in the dark about the possible reasons behind his extreme step.

His family has been unable to throw any light on what could have driven him to kill himself, said police.
