DK tourism plans to get Rs 100-cr fillip

Deputy Commissioner Dr R Vishal said as many as Rs 100 crore would be spent on developing various tourism spots and connective roads in the district as part of the promotional initiatives taken up by Tourism Department and Nabard.

Speaking at District Tourism Development Committee meet, he said works taken up for the purpose is underway. Asserting that there were lots of tourism potential in the district, he said measures ought to be taken to exploit the available opportunities.

He said outsourcing through contract is being carried out for coast development and maintenance at Kaup, Trasi and Maravanthe sea shores. Measures would be taken to develop beaches at Someshawar and Padubidri. Priority would be given to provide basic infrastructural facilities and safety and cleanliness ensured.

He said the police chowki and tower would be set up at Malpe shore. The garbage collection and beach connective road on the northern side would be completed at the earliest, he added.

Tourism Department Assistant Director Nagraj said as many as three home stays are working in the district, while another 11 applications are sent to State office for approval. Funds released for 2014-15, would be utilised to take up tourism development initiatives.
He said documentary on various tourism spots, hoardings, and map would be printed. Tender has been floated. The DC said if private parties come forward to develop Saint Mary’s Island on PPP model, the venture would be supported. He also discussed initiatives to be presented in the tourism investors meet held at forthcoming PATA-2015 in Bengaluru.

The DC also said tendering is under process to take up development initiates at Malpe beach.

Speaking at meeting of Malpe Development Committee, he said pending payment from boat owners is being collected and measures would be taken against boat owners who fail to pay the amount.

He said foods supplied at 24 petty outlets at beach are verified for hygiene regularly. The granite benches would be installed and toilet construction is underway.

MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj discussed the drinking water facilities and the construction of the crematorium at Malpe. He also looked into the issues pertaining to the payment of the life guards deployed at the beach.
