A  core ingredient of well-loved confectionaries, licorice is a soothing herb, known to be a powerhouse of antioxidants with antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties.

Licorice root imparts a peculiar sweeter-than-sugar flavour and is available in all herbal stores in the form of capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, gels, ointments and tea blends.

Here are some of its benefits:

n It helps to heal inflamed skin. It has proved to be a useful remedy for inflammations like dermatitis, arthritis, eczema and cysts.

n Since ancient times, licorice root has been used a remedy for upper respiratory problems and it decreases the symptoms associated with cough and cold.

n It is also an effective agent in treating digestive disorders such as peptic
ulcers and gastrointestinal issues.

n Licorice boosts the immune system. It is a powerful herb in treating urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, allergies and autoimmune disorders.

n To some extent, licorice also assists in the regulation of hormones in the human body. It soothes hormonal disorders such as fatigue, mood swings, hot flashes, nausea and
bloating during menstruation.

n Due to its inherent sweetness, licorice is used to flavour candies.

n The component of glycyrrhizin acid present in licorice root helps in dealing with depression and anxiety by promoting adrenal gland function. This component is found to enhance the lifetime of cortisol, one of the anti-inflammatory hormones of the human body.

n According to some studies, licorice is also effective in aiding weight loss.

A word of caution: Due to the
estrogenic action in the root, licorice is not  recommended for pregnant ladies and infants.
