Rain brings relief to farmers

Agri activities gain pace as monsoon makes headway

A few districts in the State received monsoon showers on Tuesday. Showers have triggered sowing activities in most of these places.

Apart from Bagalkot city, heavy rainfall lashed more than an hour at several places in the district. A few farmers have prepared the fields and are all set to sow green gram, maize, sunflower, soybean, ground nuts, etc.

Shiggaon taluk in Haveri district also received good rainfall on Tuesday afternoon.
Delay in the arrival of monsoon had left the farmers worried. For the last 15 days, they had prepared the fields to undertake sowing activities.

Tadas, Attigeri, Hulaguru, Andalagi, Kundur, Bankapur and the surrounding areas have received good rainfall. Rainwater gushed into several houses and shops in Shiggaon town. Roads were inundated leading to traffic snarls.

Monsoon has intensified in Dakshina Kannada district with the region receiving intermittent rainfall throughout the day on Tuesday.

Rain also brought a heave of relief from the scorching sun. In the last 24 hours, Moodbidri has received highest of 52.5 mm rainfall followed by Mangaluru - 44 mm, Bantwal - 25.2 mm, Puttur - 13.3 mm, Belthangady - 6.8 mm and Sullia- 5.2 mm.

Warning for fishermen

Under the influence of cyclonic storm “Ashobaa,” squally weather with wind speed occasionally reaching 70 to 80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph likely along and off Karnataka coast. Fishermen along and off Karnataka coast have been advised not to venture into sea during next 48 hours for fishing. Fishermen out at open sea are advised to return to the coast, said a release from Meteorological department.

Udupi district received 40.3 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Karkala taluk has recorded highest of 49.3 mm rainfall, followed by Udupi - 42.4 mm and Kundapur - 29.2 mm. Areas like Byndoor, Shiroor, Kambadakone, Ajekaru, Nadpalu, Kaup, Padubidri, Hejmadi, Udyavara, Parkala, Brahmavar, received moderate to heavy rainfall on Tuesday.

Kadur and Birur towns in Chikkamagaluru district also received good rainfall.
