The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike on Saturday removed heaps of garbage which had piled up for months on Avenue Road.

The officials of Palike South zone and West zone joined hands and pressed around 100 Pourakarmikas into service for removing waste from Avenue Road, KR Market and surrounding places. Disinfectant was sprayed in the area to reduce the stench. Deccan Herald, in its edition dated June 13, had published a story on the stench due to piled up garbage on Avenue Road.

The Joint Commissioner of the West zone, Lakshminarasimhaiah, said the garbage was removed in the morning. He added that there were some problems at Terra Firma garbage processing unit on Doddaballapur Road, which hampered the garbage disposal.

“For three days, the trucks could not unload garbage due to rains. There were some other technical issues too, which have been resolved. We have cleared all the garbage from the KR Market area and sent it to the processing units,” the officer said.

BBMP Administrator T M Vijay Bhaskar said three earthmovers at the Terra Firma had developed some problem, due to which the unloading of waste was affected.

“Now, all the earthmovers are functioning and the problem has been resolved,” said the administrator.

Meanwhile, the traders at Mamulpet said that the garbage woes had worsened in their area.

Sajjanraj Mehta, a trader, said that the garbage removal drive had not reached Mamulpet, a part of Chickpet, where the Palike claimed to have started an intensive clearing drive.
