Puri temple gets new idols  after 19 years

After 19 long years, the famous Jagannath temple in Puri got new set of idols on Tuesday.The old wooden idols of the presiding deities, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra, were replaced with new ones.

They included Bramha Paribartan or the shifting of the divine sacred soul of the deities from the wooden bodies of the old idols to the new ones.This was the most important ritual of the idol replacement process which is popularly known as Nabakalebara festival which is being celebrated in the temple this year after a gap of 19 years.

A very few selected servitors of the important shrine shifted the Bramhas or the sacred souls of the deities. They were blind folded and their hands were wrapped with specified clothes when they shifted the souls from the old idols to the new ones. The entire temple was emptied except the servitors and all the lights of the shrine were switched off. The gates of the temple were also closed. However, thousands of devotees were seen sitting in front of the temple praying.
