2 charred to death as bikes collide head-on

Two men were charred to death and another grievously injured when two bikes collided head-on and caught fire on Magadi Road on the outskirts of the City on Sunday night.

 Police said Sampath Kumar, a resident of Kamakshipalya and another man were killed on the spot. The injured Dhananjay, a native of Bihar, is a resident of Seegehalli here and was working in a concrete mixing company. It is suspected that the unidentified man who died in the accident is also from Bihar and a colleague of Dhananjay.

The accident occurred around 7.50 pm near Dakshnina Murthy circle at Chennenahalli in Taverekere police limits. Kumar, who was riding a bike, was coming from Kalya Gate after visiting his father-in-law's house and was going towards his residence in Kamakshipalya.

Dhananjay and his friend were coming in the opposite direction and were reportedly going towards Magadi Road. Both the riders were at top speed and while manoeuvring, they collided head-on. The handles of both the bikes got entangled and the two bikes were dragged for about a metre, said the police.

Due to the impact, the fuel tanks of both the bikes scrapped along the road and the fuel started leaking. Sparks flew of due to the friction triggering fire. Kumar and rider of the other bike, who could not escape, were charred to death on the spot while Dhananjay suffered about 50 per cent burns. Passersby alerted the police and fire service personnel, who rushed to the spot and doused the fire, the police said.

A senior police officer who visited the spot, said, “Two bodies were charred beyond recognition and the injured has also suffered major burns. He is in a critical condition in Victoria Hospital. It took a while to ascertain the identity of one of the victim. As the injured is not in a condition to speak it will take time to ascertain the identity of the other victim.” 

The two bodies were shifted to Rajarajeshwari Nagar hospital for post-mortem. Vehicular movement came to a halt for over two hours on Magadi Road, off the Chennenahalli gate, following the accident. More than 10 policemen were deployed to regulate traffic. Normalcy was restored around 10 pm, the police said. Tavarekere police have registered a case.
