Cops to get bullet-proof jackets

Last Updated 24 January 2010, 19:16 IST

“Each of the 100 jackets will cost between Rs 80,000 and Rs one lakh. The Department will spend a sum of Rs one crore to purchase 100 such jackets. At present, the Police Department possesses 120 bullet-proof jackets including some 360 degree jackets (the ones covering entire body, from head to feet in all direction). All the 100 jackets will be 360 ones,” said City Police Commissioner Shankar M Bidari.

“We are planning to give the jackets to other staff besides commando force. Most modern equipment and other facilities will certainly boost the morale of the force,” noted Bidari.

The company to be assigned the responsibility of providing the jackets is not the one which provided jackets to Mumbai police during 26/11 terror strike. The State government will not touch eight other firms which were blacklisted by the Central government for supplying low quality jackets, said the police.

It is just another safety measure to make Bangaloreans, especially those residing in and around White Field, Electronic City and ITPL area, feel safe and secure. The force will be deployed in these areas after the commando training, said officers.
