Tuition syndicate depriving poor meritorious students, says legislator

Srinivaspur MLA K R  Ramesh Kumar (Congress) on Thursday said the “tuition syndicate” run by teachers for coaching students for the Common Entrance Test (CET) was playing havoc with meritorious students from socio-economically deprived classes.

Participating in a discussion on the budget proposals for 2015-16 in the Legislative Assembly, Kumar said tuition centres charged exorbitant fees to the tune of Rs five lakh per annum. “Students studying in government colleges are not able to compete with CBSE students and those who attend the coaching centres. They end up shattered,” Kumar said and urged the government to intervene.

He also urged the government to take steps to improve the quality of education provided to government school students. “All government high schools should have attached hostels especially for the socially deprived,” he said.

Ramesh Kumar took a dig at the ministers for not touring the State and interacting with people. The ministers should conduct surprise inspections and ensure that people get effective services. “You (ministers) get free AC car, personal assistants and travelling allowance. Still you do not tour the State. The ministers will be either in their constituency or in Bengaluru,” he stated.
