Four farmers commit suicide

Four farmers have ended their lives in different parts of the State.Manjunath Gulappa Jagapur, 32, hanged himself from a tree at his field in Amminbhavi, Dharwad taluk, on Wednesday. The rural police said Jagapur was upset over the failure of crops and was unable to repay the crop loans he had taken from moneylenders and co-operative societies.

He owned five acres and 32 guntas of agricultural land and had also taken several fields on lease. He had borrowed Rs 1.30 lakh from a bank, Rs 50,000 from a co-operative society and Rs two lakh from moneylenders in the village.

A 52-year-old farmer, Gangappa Bhimappa Ullagaddi, consumed poison at his home at Hanumasagar village in Ramdurg taluk, Belagavi district, on Tuesday.

The police said he had not taken any loans but had suffered losses as the borewell he had sunk did not yield water. Ullagaddi owned 24 guntas of land in which he had cultivated sugar cane. Fearing that the crop might wither due to scanty rainfall, he took the extreme step, the police said.

The farmer is survived by his wife and seven children, including six daughters.
A debt-stressed farmer ended his life at Ganada Hosuru village in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district. G R Suresh, 36, was upset over the family dispute that errupted over the farm loans at his house on Monday. Frustrated, he attempted suicide by consuming poison. He was immediately rushed to the Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital in Mysuru. Later, he was shifted to the K R Hospital for additional treatment. He passed away on Wednesday morning.

A farmer from Tumbebeelu Majare village in Honnavar taluk committed suicide after consuming pesticides here on Wednesday. Shivaiah Lakmu Naik, 52, owned an acre of farmland and had borrowed total Rs 1,94,000 through various sources.

He was admitted to RNS Hospital in Murudeshwar, where he breathed his last.
He is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons. A case has been registered in this regard at Manki police station.
